Effective immediately1, Upcycles PDX is shifting focus from “Bikes and eBikes” to “Just Bicycles.”

No More eBikes at Upcycles.

This change is coming for a variety of reasons, including by not limited to:

  1. I don’t ride eBikes. They aren’t exiting to me personally. I just want to work on the kinds of bikes I actually like.
  2. This is a very small bike shop. eBikes are too big, too heavy, and take up too much space.
  3. This very small bike shop has very limited capacity. I can only do so much in a day and I can only shoulder so many repetitive motion injuries. Working on eBikes takes too much out of my body and is taking up far too much of my precious little time here on Earth.
  4. eBikes are a compromise between bikes and cars. I don’t want to compromise on this particular point anymore at this time in my life. Cars are bad. Bikes are better. eBikes are better than cars but bikes are better.
  5. The majority of eBike riders I have met at Upcycles have been absolutely kind, considerate, reasonable, and generally perfectly lovely2. eBikes have also, for sure, brought in every single person who has treated me horribly here in this little box where I spend too much of my time working too hard to want to suffer the abuse.
  6. I work entirely too much. I had no fun last summer. I want a better life and, to me, that means working less, and that means narrowing my focus. Upcycles provides the best tune-up in town. Cool people already know about it. That’s our specialty and I’m happy with it.

Thank you for reading that.

Take care,

Matthew 🙂

  2. For established customers, at Upcycles’ discretion, we might still work on your bike, but’s a secret. ↩︎
